Frocks, Film & Fashion

il_570xN.471051012_6029

Having a vintage moment today when it comes to fashion.

Recently I watched the HBO mini series Mildred Pierce starring two great actresses!

What I love most was the outfits of this series! Detailed, plain, patterned all wrapped into simple vintage style inspired outfits made by Ann Roth!

When I saw the frocks by Mrs Promeranz I suddenly felt the need to blog these two inspirations!

Mrs.Pomeranz is a sewing studio based in Moscow Russia. They are a group of artists and dress-makers who

create beautiful dresses and skirts based
on a classical 50’s silhouette.

Macramé – Knot your normal wall art

Lately I have been seeing macramé wall hangings everywhere.

This reminds me of my parents home in the early 80’s when wool was a high design item!

What is Macramé?

It’s a textile creation made from knotting rope/yarn etc.

The sailors used this technique to decorate bottles and knife handles on their ships.

I love the fact that you can hang it ANYWHERE! Have a look at these ideas

The Balaclava Bears

A unique collaborations between a few artists brought the poem of the Angry Wooden Bees and Villainous Balaclava Bears to life.

You can read more about the process and the artists here.

Today the focus is on a beautiful shop that exhibits art pieces made in South Africa.

In the heart of Kloof Street, Cape Town, you will find Kinshop.

Currently these Balaclava Bears and their Angry bears are exhibited here.

I love the idea of making a poem real!

THE POEM

The Tale of the Balaclava Bear
by Trollus Maximus

In the dead of night when all seems fine,
The bees were victims of a heinous crime.
Ruthless and cunning he took them by surprise,
Determined to claim his warm dripping prize.
Their stings did nothing to protect the hives,
They gave it their all, but paid with their lives.
He had pitch-black hair from head to toe,
With razor-sharp claws and eyes that glowed.
Into the shadows the beast did run,
Back into the place from whence he’d come
The air was abuzz in Fernley Woods,
With news of a hooded fiend stealing their goods.
Bitter and angry, the bees wanted him dead,
So the queen put a bounty upon his head.
A lifetime of sweet honey be the reward,
For whoever delivers justice with their claws.
To the furthest corners they went to look,
For the forest’s infamous honey crook.
Dead ends and cold trails the mob did find,
Always too slow and one step behind.
They gave up the hunt and returned one morning,
With empty paws and a friendly warning.
For all ye forest folk you best beware
For in the darkness lurks the
Balaclava
Bear!

TOO MUCH HONEY LOVIN!!

The images were taken in the shop and I was amazed at the amount of knowledge the shop manager, Tass had about each artist!

A definite visit if you are in Kloof Street and looking for something cool from South African artists!

Local Textile Wonders

From the days of re-drawing plants in the Biology class, I have loved “The Flora”.

The past week I came across two different South African textile designers who have launched a new line of prints!

For more than 10 years the boutique graphic design studio  Room13 have been creating exceptional designs.

These prints blow me away!

The other textile designer is very visible in Cape Town, driving in Bree Street Cape Town you would have seen a GIANT Yellow Dot.

This is the shop of Skinny laMinx.

She is well known locally and on international level.

Her new collection Paradise is Here is a visual bliss! Click on the link to her inspiring lookbook!

Apartment Room Art

Liottle Match Girl

A Korean artist have covered her apartment in her limitless imagination with installation art. The images are surreal and you could lose yourself in them.

I am in awe of what JeeYoung Lee have mastered in a small Asian studio apartment.

I myself have lived in an Asian apartment and know how small the space can get.

She created all the props herself all for a single photo.

This is A – Class creative detail.

French films for the weekend

I discovered a gem in my town, Stellenbosch.

A tiny video shop with an amazing film collection!

I am not a film critic

but the last week I have seen the following french films and thought I could recommend it for a lazy weekend.

French Films

My Favorite was

Little White Lies –

A bit of Family drama and anyone who have been on a beach vacation with a large family could relate 🙂

The Grocer’s Son –

This is a great glimpse into the local french community and beautiful environment and reminds us that the elderly have a place in the world.

Rust and Bone –

This is a dramatic film. I needed a tissue near the end but really amazing performance from both the lead actors!

Enjoy your weekend!
